ANIMAL TRANSPORT
RESOURCES
(Use any/all for
requests concerning options for transporting animals)
The Organic Pet does not endorse any transportation company or organization listed here. Please use your good judgement when making decisions on the well-being of your pet-Do your homework, and be sure to check references!
Please note: The inclusion of a service,
organization or program in this listing is NOT an endorsement or
recommendation. We have not checked them all out. Even if we attempted to do
so, management and policies can change suddenly. We strongly suggest that you
check them out yourself before using a specific service.
Also, please note that many volunteer transport services
utilize "multi-leg transports," which means that several volunteers
each drive one or more "legs." In our experience, we've found that
transports involving many legs can be very stressful for animals. In addition,
each time an animal is transferred to a new individual in a different vehicle,
there is the risk of injury to either the animal or the transporter. There is
also an increased risk that the animal will get loose and become lost. While
multi-leg transports can be a good option in many cases, we strongly encourage
you to use caution when considering this type of transport. For more transport
tips, see the following link

Information
about flying pets during summer months:
Continental
is the only airline that ships animals without restriction during the summer
season (May-September), except flights routed through Phoenix Sky Harbor
International Airport. All other airlines implement a temperature moratorium
and restrict their animal service to red-eye flights when the temps fall below
85 degrees (70 degrees for short-snouted dogs) at every point along the entire
route. This is a virtual impossibility for a variety of reasons, not the least
of which being that animals are required to make a connection and it is at this
stopover airport where the temp is usually too high. Not all routes are open to
transporting animals due to only a certain number of planes being equipped with
pressurized and climate controlled cargo compartments. Shippers and/or
receivers may need to travel to another airport depending on route
availability. For more information, contact Continental Airlines' pet
information/reservation department at 800-575-3335.
Information
about air transport of pit bulls, pit bull mixes:
Delta and
Continental Airlines currently provide air transport of pit bulls and pit bull
mixes. Unfortunately, pits have been erroneously classified in the same
category as short-nosed breeds and, therefore, can only fly Delta when
temperatures are 70 degrees or less (typically red-eye flights) all the way
throughout the route, which is inclusive of connecting airport and final
destination. Not a likely scenario during much of the year let alone summer.
Continental's
policy now allows shippers to take advantage of the fact that pits are most
often mixed with another breed. Here is Continental's policy, which can be
found at this link:http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/animals/restrictions.aspx?SID=8A226B0FABCB42D1BD18B42BD05AC83D
